Houwan Rd., Checheng Township, Pingtung County 944, Taiwan (R.O.C.)
Behind the Marine Museum lies a small and delicate fisherman village, Houwan. This is truly an easy place for you to enjoy the tranquil ocean view day after day. The residents here still keep the lifestyle of generations to “cook” oceanic water for salt. They also use brine to make tofu. Due to the famous Taiwanese movie “Cape No. 7”, there are tourists visiting after since so the villagers also provide DIY class for you to do the same process now.
Not only the lifestyle of people is attractive, this area is also famous for Land Crabs and Hermit Crabs. It is not difficult to find Hermit Crabs on the beach everywhere, but Land Crabs need fresh water to survive. The lucky part is that the underground water is very close to the ground surface and it nurtures a lot of plants that are needed by the Land Crab. You might have a chance to find them walking on the road as you take a stroll at night. In fact, in the breeding season, numerous Land Crabs will get on the main road of Kenting. The government has to gather volunteers to protect them to get across the road.
