Kavalan Whisky Distillery (金車噶瑪蘭威士忌 酒廠), which was awarded the top spot for single malt whisky in the World Whiskies Awards, is dedicated to producing single malt Scotch whisky. Visitors to the distillery can enjoy complimentary whisky tastings and follow a guided tour to learn about the various distillation equipment and the whisky-making process, making for a leisurely and educational tasting experience.
Before gaining international recognition, Kavalan was primarily known in Taiwan for Mr. Brown Coffee and Boer Tea, and the European-style castle-themed café in Toucheng, Yilan. However, with the rising popularity of whisky in Taiwan, many visitors now make it a point to visit the distillery to see the grain storage tanks, distillation facilities, and expansive warehouses.
Upon entering the distillery, visitors will notice numerous retired oak barrels painted with various designs along the pathway. The deep color of whisky comes from being stored in oak barrels that have been charred at high temperatures. Without this process, the spirit cannot be classified as whisky. If fortunate, visitors may catch a glimpse of the staff conducting the charring process through the large glass windows.
The term ""single malt Scotch whisky"" refers to whisky produced exclusively at a single distillery, and the whisky produced at Kavalan is stored in the cellar until it reaches maturity, at which point it is bottled. After the tour, visitors are invited to sample a variety of whiskies produced at the distillery. For those who do not drink alcohol, the second floor offers a spacious area with floor-to-ceiling windows where they can enjoy a cup of coffee while admiring this source of pride for Taiwan.
