Kaohsiung National Stadium

The Kaohsiung National Stadium was completed in 2009 for the purpose of hosting the opening and closing ceremonies and providing a main competition venue for the World Games in Taiwan. The facility can accommodate more than 40,000 spectators, as well as features track and field areas, and a soccer field. Consequently, it is the first of Taiwan’s sporting facilities to conform to the standard stadium specifications of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). Apart from hosting international competitions, large concerts and charity events are occasionally held here.

The stadium was designed by renowned architect Toyo Ito and is different from the traditional design concept applied in sports venues. Indeed, this is the first global sports venue to feature a screw-type external structure with solar photovoltaic panels on its roof. The venue is quite beautifully designed, and looks something like a dragon ready to take off in flight. In addition to the building structure being made out of 100% recyclable materials, the main stadium solar panels are designed to produce an annual output of 1.1 million kilowatts of electricity, such that at non-event times, it can sell excess power.
