Central Cross-Island Highway

Connecting Hehuanshan (合歡山) and Tianxiang (天祥) in Taroko, the Provincial Highway 8 (台8線) is also known as Central Cross-Island Highway (中部橫貫公路). It is said to be the most picturesque route in Taiwan. Driving along this scenic highway, you will encounter the highest-elevation police station and gas station in Taiwan. Finally, Hehuan Wuling (合歡武嶺) at the height of 3,275 meters – the highest point in the Taiwanese highway system – will be reached. If time and weather permit, make a stopover here to enjoy the scenic mountain views.

In winter, Guanyuan (關原) at an altitude of 2,374 meters above sea level is also a good spot to admire the vast sea of clouds that spread out right before you, with the surrounding mountains shrouded in mist and clouds, creating a dreamy sight to the eyes. Beliu Giant Tree (碧綠神木) located at the 128 km mark of Central Cross-Island Highway has been standing for more than 3,000 years and is still going strong. There is a cozy café where you can have a coffee break from the long drive, and you will be again fully immersed in Mother Nature.

During the typhoon season (from July to September), the Central Cross-Island Highway is often closed as falling rocks are not uncommon here. Please check the Daily Road Conditions on the Taroko National Park website before visiting Taroko. Refer to "Central Cross-Island Highway (Highway 8)."
