Missionary House

Located directly opposite Aletheia University (真理大學) in Tamsui, Missionary House was first established in 1875 by Dr. George Leslie Mackay to serve as a residence that accommodated the missionaries at the time. This Spanish-style building was built out of sandstone blocks that have a distinctive thermal characteristic, making it a perfect place to stay cool on a subtropical island like Taiwan. Overlooking Tamsui River and Guanyinshan in the distance, Missionary House is surely not to be missed on your visit to Tamsui. Today, it has been converted into a restaurant where hospitality students practice their service skills and take visitors on a guided tour through the history of Tamsui, in which they will come to understand how crucial the role that Missionary House once played.

In the garden stands a giant camphor tree that has been around for more than a century. Like a grandpa sitting in a rocking chair, it can’t wait to tell you all the stories that you’ve missed here.
