Being a missionary was not George Leslie Mackay’s only identity. He was also a revolutionary teacher who introduced a Western education system to the communities of Northern Taiwan. Initially without a classroom, Mackay started his lessons on foot. In 1880, he returned to his hometown, Oxford County in Canada, to publish his first report of work in Taiwan. After securing donations from townsmen of Oxford, Mackay established a modernized school after his return to Taiwan. Thus, the reason for the name of Oxford College (牛津學堂). And no, it is unrelated to the University of Oxford in England.

Completed in 1882, Oxford College’s building are renowned for their unusual mixing of Eastern and Western elements. One such example is the pinnacle of the chapel in a Chinese style four-section compound. This structure has since been turned into a museum that holds an extensive collection of historical documents and photos related to Aletheia University, the Presbyterian Church, and Mackay. As the predecesor of the now much larger Aletheia University, Oxford College serves as an important centerpiece of this historic campus.
